Taking Mental Health Awareness Closer to the People in Sierra Leone

May is globally recognized as Mental Health Awareness Month. It is a time dedicated to promoting collective action toward better mental well-being. This year’s theme, “More Good Days Together,” reflects the reality in Sierra Leone, where family and community support, and togetherness continue to play an important role in helping people overcome Mental Health challenges.

The message behind the theme is simple – we can have more good days together when we support one another.

MHC-SL has championed mental health awareness, advocacy, and community engagement over the years, and this year is no different. Through our strategic outreach and public sensitization campaigns, we are ensuring that conversations about mental health move beyond hospitals and offices and into the communities where people live, work, trade, travel, and interact every day.

Prioritizing Grassroots Mental Health Awareness

Engaging Individuals and Communities for Greater Impact

This year, the Coalition intentionally prioritized awareness raising at both the individual and community levels, recognizing that each approach creates a different but equally important impact.

One-on-one engagements provide safe opportunities for people to ask questions, express concerns, and receive accurate information about mental health. In many communities, these personal interactions help build trust and encourage people to speak openly about issues they may otherwise keep hidden.

Community-level engagements, on the other hand, create broader public awareness. They help challenge stigma publicly, encourage community dialogue, and promote collective responsibility in supporting persons living with mental health conditions.

Our focus has been on strategic communities within the Western Area Urban and Rural Districts, especially areas with high public interaction and movement of people, where awareness messages can reach large and diverse audiences.

Bringing Mental Health Conversations into Everyday Spaces

Reaching People Where They Live, Work, and Interact

In Sierra Leone, many people still struggle with stigma, misconceptions, and limited access to accurate information about mental health conditions. As a result, some people continue to suffer in silence because of fear, discrimination, rejection, or misunderstanding within their communities.

By taking awareness activities into marketplaces, transport junctions, and other busy public spaces, the Coalition is helping normalize conversations around mental health while encouraging communities to become more supportive and informed.

A Collective Commitment to “More Good Days Together”

Building Hope, Inclusion, and Community Support

As Mental Health Awareness Month continues, the Mental Health Coalition Sierra Leone remains committed to creating platforms that encourage inclusion for persons living with mental health conditions. These are not just one-time activities – It is an ongoing journey!

Together, we can create More Good Days Together.
