The Mental Health Coalition – Sierra Leone implements strategic programs designed to strengthen mental health systems, protect the rights of persons with mental and psychosocial disabilities, and promote inclusive community support. Through advocacy, public awareness campaigns, capacity building, and livelihood initiatives, we work with government institutions, civil society organizations, and community leaders to ensure that vulnerable and marginalized individuals receive the care, dignity, and opportunities they deserve.

Strengthening Mental Health Systems and Communities Across Sierra Leone

The Mental Health Coalition – Sierra Leone implements a range of programs designed to improve mental health awareness, strengthen healthcare systems, support vulnerable communities, and influence national policy. Through partnerships, research, and community engagement, we work to ensure that mental health services are accessible, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of people across Sierra Leone.

Mental Health Awareness & Anti-Stigma Campaigns

We lead national and community awareness campaigns to improve public understanding of mental health and reduce stigma surrounding mental and psychosocial disabilities.

Our campaigns focus on:

  • Promoting accurate information about mental health

  • Encouraging people to seek help early

  • Addressing discrimination against persons with disabilities

  • Engaging media, communities, and institutions in mental health dialogue

These campaigns have helped shift public attitudes and increase awareness of mental health as a critical public health issue.

Training & Capacity Building

We strengthen the capacity of healthcare professionals, community leaders, and service providers through training and professional development programs.

Key activities include:

  • Training healthcare workers on mental health care practices

  • Workshops and seminars on psychosocial support

  • Capacity building for community organizations

  • Strengthening service delivery systems within health facilities

These programs help improve the quality and availability of mental health services across the country.

Community Outreach & Engagement

The Coalition works directly with communities, particularly in rural and underserved areas, to promote mental health awareness and access to support.

Our community engagement initiatives include:

  • Establishing local support networks

These efforts help communities better understand mental health and encourage supportive environments for people in need.

Youth Mental Health & Education Programs

Young people are a key focus of our work. We implement programs in schools and youth groups to address mental health challenges and substance abuse among young people.

Our youth programs include:

We conduct research and collect data to better understand mental health needs and inform national policies and programs.

Our work includes:

  • Research on the mental health landscape in Sierra Leone

  • Collaborative research with partner organizations

  • Specialized research projects such as maternal mental health

For example, the Coalition collaborated with Project Peanut Butter to study the relationship between nutrition and mental health among pregnant and young mothers.

Community Support & Inclusion Programs

The Coalition supports programs that promote social inclusion and improve the quality of life for persons with mental health and psychosocial disabilities.

Key initiatives include:

  • Community support networks for individuals and families

  • Programs promoting participation and inclusion of persons with disabilities

European Migrant Support Initiatives

Programs aimed at assisting Fulɓe migrants in Europe with legal aid, vocational training, and integration support, while maintaining strong cultural ties.
